Global Garbage Man Day!

Chloe AR Richards Blog
Jenny AR Richards Blog

With today being Global Garbage Man Day, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to introduce
our “Bin Ladies” Chloe Richards and Jenny Smith, who form an integral part of our Euro Bin team.

Chloe has been managing our bin department since 2018 and covers all
aspects of the role from managing the bin round, accounts, customer
service, drivers’ mate, and cleaning/delivering bins – all we need is for
her to get her Class 2 licence to drive the wagons and she will be the
ultimate “bin lady”!

Jenny joined Chloe’s team in April and works 3 days in the office and 2
days on the road in the bin wagon, loading and assisting the driver.
Being on the bin round gives her the fortunate advantage of being able
to see both sides of the business. Jenny says ‘It’s been lovely to meet the
trade customers, and the farmers. When we are out on the road, we can offer
advice or to iron out any issues that they may be having. I have had some
funny looks from the public, The best being from a little boy shouting ‘Look
Mummy, a bin Man, and a bin Woman!!!!’

We are always looking to grow this side of the business whether it’s for a one-off event or a more
permanent basis, we are happy to discuss your options with you. Please feel free to give our euro
bin division a call on 01630 639888 ext. 4 with any enquires you have.

The Situation in Ukraine

We never thought for one minute we would see this conflict in our lifetime and we knew we needed to help in some way.  A.R.Richards Ltd is fortunate enough to have the facilities, manpower and logistics to be in a position to help.  We put an alert out to all customers, suppliers, staff and social media (and pulled in a few favours) to ask for donations and contributions towards an artic wagon load of supplies to be delivered to Kalisz, Poland.

The response we had was overwhelming and we were blown away by peoples generosity, even down to food for people sorting donations and money to the drivers for food and drink for their journey.   We also set up a Just Giving page to raise funds for the fuel, which has managed to generate and amazing £3,943so far!

Teams of staff and volunteers gave up their time to help sort all the donations into categories and label them up ready to be loaded on Tuesday.  With everybody’s help we exceeded our expectations and filled an artic wagon, a van and trailer with much needed essentials.  544 bags and 26 pallet boxes!

Our boys set off on their journey on the evening of Tuesday 15th, heading to Calais, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and finally Kalisz, Poland.

After 1092 miles they made it safely to Poland on the morning of Thursday 17th and have been successfully unloaded.  All donations were gratefully received, especially the baby supplies, as soon as it was offloaded, they were being provided to the hungry infants.

By midnight on Friday 18th the boys were back safely, they have done an amazing job and we are so proud of them.

We will be sending another load soon and have been given a list of supplies needed from the charity.  Going forward we will be accepting donations of:
Torches
Batteries
Power banks
First aid kits
Blankets/thermal blankets
Personal care products
Towels
Food in cans/long term food products
Nappies/wipes/baby food.

Our site opening times for donation drop offs are: 7am – 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays.

We cannot thank everyone enough for all their help and donations.

UPCYCLE FASHION FOR A GREEN 2022

by Chloe Richards, January 2022.

Is there a way to make Fashion Green in 2022, can anyone Upcycle?

What can you do to create your own recycled Fashion?

Many of us are already donating used clothes to centres like the Salvation Army, but there is still a good portion of clothing ending up in landfills. With the need to reduce our carbon, water and waste footprints becoming even more important in 2022, we can start by making a few changes to how we discard of our unwanted clothes.

Did you know?

350’000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothing goes into landfill in the UK every year.

Here are a few ways in which you can reduce, reuse and/or upcycle your unwanted clothes.

DIY T-Shirt Quilt

If you are like me and have collected t-shirts from different shows, festivals, or events, you have been too but now they are all stuffed in a box under your bed wasting storage space. Well, why not make them into a t-shirt quilt for your room. It will be a trip down memory lane for you seeing your different ones and you’ll get that storage back under your bed.

Cotton Face Masks

As we all know, one thing that has ended up becoming a legal essential to our day to day lives lately are face masks. Its no secret that there was a shortage of the N95 and surgical masks when the pandemic was at an all time high. So many people took to upcycling their unwanted cotton clothing to make colourful handmade masks. Please see the link below to see how you can make your own.

JEANS

I don’t believe anyone who says they don’t have a favourite pair of jeans. They are the pair that is the right fit, shape and stretch (when we overindulge). When the time comes to throw them in the bin, think again. With denim being a hardly material, it can be upcycled into many things from teddy bears to aprons. Have a look at link below for some creative ways to jazz up your jeans.

21 Ingeniously Creative Ways to Upcycle Old Jeans / Bright Side

Now I know not everyone has the textiles gift when it comes to upcycling your clothes. So other options are:

  • Check to see if your council collects clothes and textiles to be recycled.
  • Donate items to registered charity shops.
  • Some schools often fundraise for local schools, churches, or organisations such as Girl Guides or Scouts. A textile company are arranged to collect your clothes in exchange for money to go towards the chosen cause.
  • Many high street retailers such as Primark and M&S offer clothing banks in-store. Meaning when you pop into store, bring along you bag of old clothes to donate.

The UK could save around £3billion per year from the cost of the resources we use to make and clean clothes if we changed the way we supplied, used, and disposed of clothing. It might not seem like you are doing much by dropping a bag of unwanted clothes off at the charity shop, but every little helps to increase the percentage of clothes ending up in landfill

At AR Richards we are passionate that we want people to do the right thing. We feel that is our responsibility as a professional waste company to educate and offer the correct choice to consumers all the time. We work closely with the team at the Salvation Army to ensure that we offer Clothes recycling to our list of recycling options. Sorting your household waste and using the recycling bin is simply stage one of the process. We must ensure that all waste is then handled correctly and most importantly it is reprocessed correctly and in such a manner that it can be reused. This is all part of creating a circular economy.

HOW YOU CAN REUSE THIS CHRISTMAS

by Abi Philp, December 2021, with the help of Director Sheilagh Richards.

How can you RECYCLE, REUSE and REDUCE this Christmas?

What easy tricks can you do to recycle?

Our in house resident seam stress and design expert Sheila has been working tirelessly the last few weeks making Christmas decorations from others rubbish! The results have amazed the whole office at A R Richards. From the very simple to the most complex of baubles there is something for everyone.

Christmas Snowflakes, Tags and Paper Chains:
Such a simple but beautiful way to decorate. Using old books, perhaps that have pages missing, cut the paper into snowflake shapes, gift tags or paper chains to create an elegant but effective decoration. Do make sure that when you are using sharp scissors you have an adult with you at all times!

A lovely tip, is use sheet music that perhaps has sentimental meaning to you or your family.

Mince Pie Baubles:

Over the festive period we eat thousands of these tasty treats, it is believed that on average an adult in the UK eats 24 mince pies in the festive period! Why not use the foil casing that mince pies come in to create beautiful metallic baubles for your tree. Sheila simply added some single buttons that she had to add a little more sparkle…!

HOW ELSE CAN YOU RECYCLE THIS CHRISTMAS?

At A R Richards we are passionate about doing the right thing. We want to offer our customers that very best service and equipment whilst being able to recycle over 97% of the waste that we process. Over Christmas the amount of rubbish that the UK produces is mind boggling.

As an example, it is expected that the average UK adult spends around £330 buying Christmas presents, and the average child will receive 16 gifts in total. With Christmas being celebrated in many countries around the world, and the world’s population standing at 7.8 billion people (as of December 2021), that’s a lot of wrapping paper, card board boxes, plastic packaging and name tags that need to be disposed of once Santa has visited!  Add to this the  one billion Christmas cards being sold in the UK alone each year, and the 17.2 million Brussels sprouts that go uneaten, and that’s even more waste that needs to be disposed of correctly, and as environmentally-friendly as possible.

As the statistics show, in the UK alone we create 30% more waste than usual during the festive period,  and this includes two million turkeys and six million Christmas trees. These are shocking amounts and they show that something has to be done by both businesses and consumers to reduce our impact on the planet. Simply, the more waste we send to landfill the more methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) that gets released into the air, and the more the temperature of the Earth rises. We are passionate at  A R Richards that we work to reduce this.

We offer skip hire to Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire from as little as £130 + vat. Why not share this cost with a neighbour? Not only does it speed that Christmas clear up, it also ensures that you are doing your little bit for the environment. We want everyone to have the very best Christmas they can, but we want to ensure that Christmases in the future are still as brilliant for future generations.

HOPE HOUSE DARK RUN

by Louise Bolton, November 2021

On Friday 29th October, friends and family of the AR Richards staff took part in the 5k Hope House Dark Run/Waddle/Walk. After being limited to social events it was FANTASTIC to see so many of the team supporting the event… we had runners from Transport, Weighbridge, Accounts, HR, Building Merchants, Waste, Skip Team, Eurobins and Construction!

Dave Morgan took on the challenge of Course Designer. He created a challenging multi lap course that included lots of puddles and dark patches to make our run a little bit spookier! Overall, we needed to do 4.75 laps to complete the 5km. Luckily the weather was kind to us, and we didn’t have any soggy witches! Friends and family were asked to dress up which added to the Spooookktacular. Turning a dark corner and being confronted by a glow in the dark skeleton certainly added to it.

Once we had all completed, we all met back at the staff canteen to cheer on everyone else and present all runners with their Glow in the Dark Hope House Medals. We also had some special prizes for those who showed off their spooky side and dressed up.

Overall, we had a really fun family night all for a great cause! Being able to able to catch up with friends we hadn’t seen in a while, whilst exercising and dressed up.

The team at A R Richards managed to raise a whopping £800 with a few more donations to come in.  Thank you to everyone that took part and came to support and after brief discussions look out for the DARK RUN 2022 which we hope will be bigger and better!
