Food Waste Action Week
Around a third of the food we produce worldwide is lost or wasted and it’s having a significant impact on climate change. In fact, it contributes a staggering 8–10% of total man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. WRAP have launched the first ever Food Action Week (1st- 7th March).
As a Recycling and Waste Facility we want to educate people and show our support for the campaign.
This wasted food can be unsold food, or food that we throw away. This is simply adding fuel to the already roaring climate crisis that we face. At A.R.Richards as a recycling facility we work to educate all our customers. We want to ensure that people understand where there waste goes and the importance of using the correct legal processes for disposing of ALL waste. Whilst we do not specialise in food waste, it is a WASTE and we feel passionately that people should be aware of what is happening when they throw food away.
Did you know… Bananas as the 4th most wasted food in the UK. It is estimated that daily we throw out 1.4 million edible bananas! It is not simply the waste of the end product, but think back in the process. The energy used to grow the banana, the fuel to import the banana, the man hours to move the banana to the supermarket. And for what end result? Nothing. It is thrown in the bin.
Its facts like this that are the reason that WRAP have launched the Food Waste Week. By partnering with a number of leading global companies WRAP are hoping to educate, share knowledge and inspire people and workplaces. At A R Richards we are using our social media platforms to spread the word and share facts. Within the office we are asking the team to think of their top food saving tips… freezing grapes to pop as snacks or as fruity ice cubes in a G & T are up with the favourites!
If food waste were a country, it would have the third biggest carbon footprint after the USA and China.
Our Euro Bins team can offer a dedicated Food Waste bin to any site or event. It may be that this is not appropriate for your situation, however it is so IMPORTANT that you use the correct bin for food waste. If you throw food waste into a Dry Recycling Bin not only is this the wrong bin, but the food waste will cause all the recycled waste to be damaged beyond use. A key message from WRAP is to use your freezer. Freezing the food you haven’t had time to eat acts like a pause button, giving you more time to eat the food you’ve bought. It’s safe to freeze food right up to the use-by date. Find out what you can and can’t freeze and what the correct way of defrosting is. Freezing what you have and buying frozen will help you use up everything without it expiring. With this make sure that your freezer is energy efficient, some older models may be very inefficient. We are able to offer freezer waste disposal at Bensite,
as with all our hazardous waste you will receive a consignment note as standard.
Remember that a number of household products are now classified as Hazardous Waste– if you are unsure please read HERE.
A final fact for you to consider… Potatoes are the most wasted food in the UK. Daily 5.8 million are thrown away daily. Check out our favourite potato recipe HERE. Our agricultural division are very passionate about all things tuber as they spend so may hours tending to fields to feed us all. We must as a nation spread the knowledge that we have an share any top tips to ensure that we do our bit in reducing Food Waste forever.
